Jenn Palilonis

  • Director of Center for Emerging Media Design & Development (EMDD) at Ball State University.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and master’s degree in Composition & Rhetoric from Ball State University
  • Holds PhD in Human-Computer Interaction from Indiana University School of Informatics & Computing
  • Directed team of EMDD graduate students in development of MotorMVB’s website and social media and storytelling campaign to engage national volleyball community in the value of boys’ and men’s volleyball nationwide.
  • Ran media design projects in collaboration with internationally recognized partners, including the Vatican, David Letterman, and Jim Davis, the creator of Garfield the Cat.
  • Fields of professional specialization: design thinking, human-computer interaction, cross-platform storytelling, visual journalism, art direction, immersive learning, digital publishing, and interaction design.
  • Worked as a news and business designer at Detroit Free-Press (1996-1998); Sunday art director and deputy news design editor at the Chicago Sun-Times (1998-2001).
  • Runs a media design consulting firm and is an affiliate with Garcia Media; has worked on the redesigns of more than 30 print and online publications since 2000.
  • Author of two books: A Practical Guide to Graphics Reporting (Focal Press, 2006; 2016) and The Multimedia Journalist (Oxford University Press, 2012).
  • Received the National Journalism and Mass Communication Teacher of the Year Award from the Scripps Howard Foundation in 2013. Received Ball State University Outstanding Teaching award (2012). Named a Graduate of the Last Decade from the Ball State Alumni Association in 2006.
  • Married to Jim Palilonis, assistant coach for the Ball State University Men’s Volleyball team. They have 13-year-old twin sons, Gage and Quinn.
